beyond the classroom

Education here extends well beyond traditional settings, with many opportunities for outdoor learning, cultural engagement, and community connection across all age groups.

early learning & childcare

Our youngest learners experience quality early years provision that embraces the island environment. Children explore beaches, gardens, and heritage sites as natural extensions of their learning, creating smooth transitions into primary education.

sports and activities

Dramatic coastlines and open countryside provide natural venues for distinctive sporting opportunities. The annual North Isles Sports unites schools across the archipelago, while our coastal location enables sea swimming and water sports. Students also pursue Duke of Edinburgh Awards, using Orkney's landscapes to build leadership skills and resilience.

music and culture

Orkney's cultural heritage comes alive through traditional music tuition that blends contemporary, classical and local repertoire. The internationally celebrated Hadhirgaan youth project at Kirkwall Grammar School exemplifies this excellence - over three decades, hundreds of young musicians have been part of this acclaimed ensemble, with many going on to become well-known Orcadian musicians.

Drama productions often incorporate island history, while partnerships with arts organisations connect students with professional musicians, artists, and storytellers.

further & higher education

UHI Orkney operates as both college and university, offering pathways from foundation courses through to PhD studies. As part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, it provides research opportunities alongside practical vocational training, with innovative programmes in renewable energy and archaeology.

why Orkney?

Orkney consistently ranks amongst the UK's best places to live, combining outstanding natural landscapes with rich cultural heritage and strong communities.

Imagine cycling past 5,000-year-old stone circles on your way to work, or watching puffins nest on sea cliffs during lunch. Here, UNESCO World Heritage sites like Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar are your neighbours, while seals, orcas and the Northern Lights provide regular entertainment.

Orkney offers something increasingly rare: meaningful work in a place where ancient history meets modern innovation, where neighbours become lifelong friends, and where your children can roam safely in landscapes that have inspired generations.

relocation support

We understand moving to Orkney is a significant decision. We provide interview and relocation expenses in accordance with Council Policy to help you and your family transition smoothly.

balanced living

Short commutes, manageable schedules, and beautiful surroundings create space for life outside work. Many residents enjoy coastal walks, water sports, and outdoor activities right from their doorstep.

connected communities

Island life fosters genuine connections where neighbours become friends. Local events, festivals, and shared activities create lasting relationships and meaningful support networks.

family-friendly environment

Low crime rates, clean air, and natural surroundings create an ideal setting for families. Excellent schools and abundant outdoor learning opportunities support children's development.

living heritage

Active cultural scene with traditional music, festivals, and world-renowned archaeological sites. The islands blend ancient history with contemporary innovation and creativity.
